The task of identifying norms of accountability, if any, that pertain to science as a specific human endeavor and to the scientists engaging in it, is extremely demanding and rarely undertaken in any detail. Such norms would inevitably be both “intra-scientific” (inherent in the scientific enterprise itself) and “extra-scientific” (pertaining to the interrelationships between the scientific enterprise and the environment in which it is undertaken).
