The prize is awarded by the King of Norway upon the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters recommendation. The Abel Prize recognizes contributions to the field of mathematics that are of extraordinary depth and influence.
Prof. Hillel Furstenberg is the first Israeli scientist who wins this important award. This is a great pride and honor to the whole scientific community in Israel and to the state of Israel.
