The 2025 Report on the State of the Sciences in Israel is the fifth triannual report published by the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The report is mandated by law and examines the state of Israeli science. It places particular emphasis on basic research across all fields of science: the humanities, the social sciences, the exact sciences, the life sciences and medicine.
Alongside an overview of research activity in these disciplines, the report examines the research infrastructure that supports scientific work, as well as the international standing of Israeli academia. The 2025 report also dedicates a chapter to analyzing the impact of the war on Israeli research and its position in the international arena.
The report was prepared over a period of approximately two years by a designated main committee led by Academy Member Prof. Adi Kimchi of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Six subcommittees worked under the main committee’s supervision, bringing together a total of 31 leading researchers from across the scientific disciplines to complete the report. As part of their work, the committees met with dozens of senior officials in Israel’s higher education and research systems, as well as representatives of associated organizations. The subcommittees reviewed written reports, conducted site visits, and collected multi-year data on the state of science in Israel.
In formulating their conclusions, the subcommittees compared Israel’s scientific performance with that of reference countries characterized by high scientific productivity and a population size comparable to Israel’s. They also examined trends over time in relation to findings from the State of Science reports previously published by the Academy.
This English version presents the main findings of the report. The complete report, including detailed analysis and policy recommendations, is available exclusively in Hebrew.
