The Academy Marks 20 Years of Adams Fellowships, Awarding Grants to 16 Outstanding Doctoral Students

The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Adams Family Foundation celebrated 20 years of the prestigious Adams Fellowship Program this week. In a festive ceremony held on Sunday, September 29, 2024, fellowships were awarded to 16 outstanding doctoral students - eight for 2024 and eight for 2023, whose award ceremony was postponed due to the 'Swords of Iron' war.
The fellowships, funded by the Adams Family Foundation from Canada, provide recipients with 100,000 NIS per year for three or four years of study, in addition to tuition exemption and $3,000 per year for overseas training.
Professor David Harel, President of the Academy, emphasized the importance of the fellowships in a time of academic challenges: "The new Adams Fellows represent the pinnacle of academic excellence and are the future of Israeli science."
The Adams Fellows for 2024 are:
1. Michael Birk - Physics, Technion
2. Alon Gottfreund - Physics, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
3. Roni Gatnio - Sagol School of Neuroscience, Tel Aviv University
4. Elad Zahavi - Electrical Engineering, Bar-Ilan University
5. Yehonatan Zomer - Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Technion
6. Vladimir Mindel - Molecular Genetics, Weizmann Institute of Science
7. Doron Pinko - Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
8. Elad Tzalik - Mathematics and Computer Science, Weizmann Institute of Science
Mr. Sylvan Adams, representing the Adams family, also participated in the event, emphasizing the importance of supporting the next generation of innovation in Israel.
The guest lecturer at the seminar was Professor Amnon Shashua, President and CEO of Mobileye, who delivered a lecture on "The Excitement and Danger in Modern Artificial Intelligence."
