"Science Must Transcend Borders": European Academies Call to Maintain Research Cooperation

18/12/2024
The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities welcomes an important new statement by ALLEA (All European Academies), representing over 50 academies from about 40 countries, affirming that "science transcends national borders" and opposing the use of academic boycotts as tools in geopolitical disputes.

The statement comes at a crucial time when academic cooperation with Israel faces growing challenges. ALLEA's emphasis on balanced frameworks for international collaboration and protection of academic freedom reflects our shared commitment to keeping science open and globally connected.

As a proud ALLEA member, we believe this call underscores the vital importance of continuing scientific partnerships to address global challenges like climate change, public health, and technological innovation. Science must remain a bridge between nations, even in complex times.

We welcome ALLEA's clear stance supporting sustained international scientific cooperation and its commitment to keeping Europe's research landscape "open, secure, and globally relevant."

"Science is not only here to stay, but it's here to help mend the world. I also call upon my fellow scientists all over the world to “get their hands dirty” if things in their countries have to be mended, but the science has to be above all.” - Prof. David Harel, President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, speaking in ALLEA's video on maintaining global scientific collaboration.
