Critical Edition with Commentary and Introduction
Some two hundred hitherto unknown poems by the ancient Palestinian poet Sim'on bar Megas, gleaned from Cairo Genizah fragments, are published here for the first time. Simon, called by Menahem Zulai 'the partner of Yannai', composed
qedushta'ot
for the three-year cycle of readings from the Pentateuch. The commentary, inter alia, elucidates the poet's allusions to the many midrashim that he drew upon. The Introduction includes a discussion of the poet's sources and literary analyses of several works.
