Series: Sources and Studies in Jewish Languages
Edition, Hebrew Translation and Introduction
The literature of the Jews of Kurdistan is an oral tradition.
The few works preserved in manuscript were copied by local sages for their own and their students" use. These include homilies on the weekly readings from the Pentateuch and the Prophets, commentaries on translations of the five biblical scrolls and liturgical poems. Presented in this volume are homilies in Neo-Aramaic on the pentateuchal portions of Wayhi, Beshallah, and Yitro, found in manuscripts from the seventeenth century. The texts are accompanied by a translation into Hebrew and a commentary in which they are compared with the familiar versions of the rabbinic midrashim.
