The letters published here were written in the period when Abramowitsch (Mendele Mokher Seforim), constrained to leave Odessa after the pogroms of October 1905, was living in France and in Switzerland. Apart from their exchange of information and opinions on literary matters, the central topic of concern to the writers was the moving episode of their attempts to realize the plan to publish Abramowitsch's writings.
