of archaeological and architectural preservation in the Old City Basin, with a view to the future

The conference will take place on Monday and Tuesday,
28-29 May 2007 , from 9:00 am to 06:00 pm, at the Israel Academy
Date & Time: 28/05/2007

43 Jabotinsky Street
Jerusalem
In recent years, numerous archaeological excavations have been carried out in various parts of Jerusalem’s Old City and its environs. These have been followed by broad-ranging preservation, development and construction activities that will determine Jerusalem’s image and character for generations to come. The city’s sanctity to the three monotheistic religions, and its status as a national and universal cultural symbol, require our generation to take responsibility for the changes being made. We have a duty to scrutinize what is happening today in the field of archaeological activity in Jerusalem, and what is being done to preserve the city’s character and the remnants of its past.
The lectures in the conference program will examine this issue from a general historical and social point of view, in comparison with accepted practices in other historic cities around the world. The programs underway in Jerusalem will be presented and analyzed from their professional, legal and ethical perspectives.
The speakers and discussants include researchers from academic and other institutions, representatives of the bodies charged with planning and carrying out the works (the Jerusalem Municipality, the Israel Antiquities Authority, and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority), activists and interested persons in the field, archaeologists and architects.
The conference’s planning committee is headed by Prof. Yoram Tsafrir, Prof. Mike Turner and Dr. Gideon Avni.
