בחודש ספטמבר התקיים בוושינגטון די.סי. כינוס משותף עם
האקדמיה הלאומית של ארצות הברית (NAS) במסגרת ההסכם לשיתוף פעולה מדעי בין האקדמיות. הכינוס השנתי היה הפורום המדעי ע"ש בלווטניק השלישי המשותף לישראל וארצות הברית ועסק במניעת מחסור מים גלובלי בעזרת התפלה ושימוש חוזר. הוועדה המארגנת של הכינוס כללה חוקרים מובילים בתחום מישראל ומארצות הברית שעבדו יחד בשיתוף פעולה במשך חודשים רבים לעצב ולהקים תוכנית מרשימה ומוצלחת לאחר דיחוי משמעותי של הכינוס המקורי בעקבות מלחמת "חרבות ברזל".
יושבי ראש של הוועדה המארגנת הם חבר האקדמיה הישראלית פרופ' גדעון דגן מאוניברסיטת תל אביב ופרו' מנחם אלימלך מאוניברסיטת ייל. חברי הוועדה המארגנת הם פרופ' פדרו אלברז מאוניברסיטת רייס, פרופ' אבנר עדין מהאוניברסיטה העברית, פרופ' איימי צ'ילדרס מאוניברסיטת דרום קליפורניה, פרופ' משה הרצברג מאוניברסיטת בן-גוריון בנגב, פרופ' יורם אורן מאוניברסיטת בן-גוריון ופרופ"ח עדי רדיאן מהטכניון, ופרופ' שרון וולקר מאוניברסיטת דרקסל.
עשרים חוקרים משתי הארצות השתתפו בכינוס והעבירו הרצאות מעניינות, קיימו דיונים ובנו קשרים חשובים לטובת קידום שיתופי פעולה מדעים עתידיים.
